Prep
Also known as: Elevator
A prep is a foundational, two-legged cheerleading stunt where the flyer is lifted and held securely at the bases' chest-to-chin level. It serves as the ultimate building block for stunt groups to master timing, balance, and the progression toward advanced overhead stunts.
Safety first. Cheerleading skills carry real risk of injury. Train only with a qualified coach, use proper spotting and matting, and never attempt a skill unsupervised or before you are ready. This page is a reference, not coaching.
This page is a work in progress — know this skill? It still needs:
Technique
The Flyer: Must maintain a strict "hollow body" position by squeezing the core, glutes, and thighs. They must keep their weight centered over their feet and look straight ahead—never down at the bases.
The Bases: Must use their legs (not their backs) to drive the flyer upward. Once at prep level, they must keep their elbows tucked tightly into their torsos to use their bones, rather than just muscle, for support.
The Backspot: Must lift upward on the flyer's ankles or calves to alleviate weight from the bases. They control the stability of the stunt and must remain vocal, counting the beats for the group.
Safety notes
All bases maintaining constant eye contact to prioritize protecting the flyer's head, neck, and shoulders in the event of a fall.
